Geological Map of Ethiopia 1 : 1,200,000
A comprehensive understanding of the geological environment is an essential foundation for the efficient and sustainable use of natural resources such as land, water, and minerals. It is, therefore, a proven pathway to achieving sustainable socio-economic growth and ensuring the well-being of future generations in a remarkable country like Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is one of the Czech Republic‘s priority countries in the field of development cooperation, reflecting the long-standing and excellent relations between the two nations. It is particularly gratifying that the Czech Republic has had the opportunity to significantly contribute to advancing knowledge of Ethiopia‘s inanimate nature through joint development cooperation projects.
The geological map at a scale of 1:1,200,000 provides a comprehensive overview of the geological, lithological, and tectonic patterns, as well as a new lithostratigraphic Framework for Ethiopia’s geological environment, supported by remote sensing data and gravity modelling.
This work is the result of efforts undertaken between 2019 and 2024 as part of the Development Aid Project funded by the Czech Republic through the Czech Development Agency.
Hydrogeological Map of Ethiopia 1 : 1,200,000
The hydrogeological map of Ethiopia provides comprehensive information on the country’s hydrogeological environment and groundwater resource at a national level. An integral part of this map is a comprehensive digital geoscience information system designed to meet the growing demands of governmental and public institutions, fostering efficient, reliable, and strategic regional natural resource management.
This output supports sustainable resource management by equipping decision-makers, planners, and development workers with a valuable reference to address the increasingly complex socio-economic needs of the population.
The hydrodynamic environment, including recharge and discharge mechanisms, is illustrated through an interpretative conceptual hydrogeological scheme, highlighting the interaction of groundwater with surface and subsurface geological formations.
